Changes Afoot
The Swedish online casino gambling situation has made headlines over the past
week as a public commission issued a recommendation in its report that the
authorities disband part of the current state-run monopoly, Svenske Spel, and
allow foreign companies to compete in the state betting market. Svenske Spel has
stood strong on its stance that the state-run monopoly was operating in the best
interests of the Swedish gamblers. Other online casinos and the European
Commission have essentially dismissed this claim as rubbish and it seems that
the Swedish authorities may have their hands tied when it comes to defending the
monopoly.
Online casino gambling industry rumors indicate that changes are on the way for
the Swedish betting market. Although the rest of the internet gambling industry
was chagrinned by the public commission’s suggestion that Svenske Spel retain a
monopoly on online casino and internet poker gambling, it seems as though this
could be the beginning of the end for the Swedish gambling market.
One of the sticking points of the public commission is that new online casino
betting companies entering the market will have to comply with the existing
regulations that are in place concerning land and internet sportsbetting. This
means that those companies looking to offer services in Sweden will comply with
the government’s existing regulatory framework or else be considered an
illegally operating company.
Sadly for the online casinos though, this trend means that the Svenske Spel
monopoly may stay in place for another unidentified period of time until the
European Commission can convince the Swedish government that a more thorough
overhaul of the system is needed as a way to comply with EU policies.
