Sweden Online Casino Policies in Question
The European Union, and the European Commission in particular has spent the last
year and more finding ways to completely open the EU online casino gambling
industry. At the core of the EU are the central tenants of free trading of goods
and services between member-states, but several of the nations that continue to
benefit from membership in the EU do not follow the policy in all regards.
Sweden in particular has proven very difficult for the Commission because the
Swedish government has a long history of monopolies at the core of the nation’s
welfare policies.
All of that has begun to change however because of efforts by the Commission in
part, but largely because of online casinos that are no longer willing to wait
for the Commission to succeed in negotiating new policies. Instead, companies
like Betsson plowed right into the Swedish gambling industry with the setup of a
betting shop based out of Stockholm. Betsson had appealed to the Swedish
government on numerous occaisions to be allowed access to Swedish land and
online casino gamblers but has been consistently denied.
But Betsson has managed to penetrate the Swedish gambling market and it seems
that there is precious little that the Swedish government can really do to
forbid the company from remaining in operation. If the case gets taken all the
way to the European Court of Justice there is little doubt that the Swedish
government would lose the case. And additionally, Sweden’s own gambling
monopoly, Svenske Spel, has really begun to wilt under the highly restricted
government and has been denied permission to operate in the foreign online
casino gambling industry. |
