Raising Money for a Stadium
The Polish government hasn’t even passed the newly planned online casino
gambling tax legislation and is already looking for creative ways to spend the
revenue from taxing the industry. The European gambling market is increasingly
become liberalized, even in Eastern Europe. Basically, many governments have
come to the conclusion that if you can’t beat ‘em, then you should join ‘em.
Poland currently has no regulations in place to address the many online casinos
accessing Polish players. Some Polish officials are actively supporting efforts
to tax the gambling companies accessing Polish players and use that tax revenue
to fund a new football stadium.
Jacek Kapica is the Deputy Minister of Finance in Poland and he has publicly
voiced his support for new tax legislation. Other countries that have tried to
outright ban the online casinos from accessing players (the U.S.) have
encountered very serious obstacles and the result is simply that citizens
continue to gamble in a dangerous and unregulated environment. On the other
hand, if the newly proposed gambling tax legislation passes, the taxes generated
from both land and online casino gambling could fund a new sports stadium for
the country, in addition to other social programs and projects designed to help
Polish citizens.
The planned tax rate of ten percent on the land and online casinos is considered
reasonable and the government does not feel that the ten percent tax would act
as a severe deterrent for the gambling companies to continue operating in the
Polish gambling market. Kapica is largely spearheading the efforts to pass the
new tax legislation – if passed as is the new legislation would remain in effect
until 2015, at which time the Polish government would review the legislation. |
