Not Liking the Internet Gaming
News from Vietnam indicates that the government is looking to put a stop to
excessive online casino gambling habits that are cropping up in some Vietnamese
internet users. The issue has gone all the way to the Vietnamese Ministry of
Information and Communications and officials are looking for the Ministry to put
more controls in place to limit access to specific forms of skill and gambling
games that are found at the online casinos – the specific games are targeted for
their gambling or violent elements. Additionally, the request has been made in
the interest of younger Vietnamese internet users who are potentially exploited
by these games.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Information and Communications sent the
request to the Ministry and actually named the eight online games that are under
attack for their content. Three of the games are on the list because of overtly
violent nature: Sudden Attack, Cross Fire, and Special Force. Interstingly each
of these games are designed and distributed by separate gaming software
developers. The same is not true for the online casino themed games – five card
games are under attack because of their link to the internet gambling industry.
These include: Baccarat, Blackjack, Badugi, Seven Poker, and Gostop.
Vietnam has already begun to address the issues that these games represent –
although online casino gambling is taboo, gamers are spending inordinate amounts
of time either playing the video-style games or they are able to easily
circumvent government restrictions on their length and type of game play. |
