Are the Republicans Flip-Flopping - 2
The Republican Party is behind almost all of opposition to legalizing the online
casino gambling industry in the United States despite requests from foreign
countries and despite the pressure of the World Trade Organization. Republicans
traditionally take the stance that allowing gambling at the online casinos into
the U.S. will further destroy American families and will surges in gambling
addiction in the U.S. That claim though is fairly ludicrous and hasn’t stopped
the Republicans from supporting gambling at the land casinos.
However, I digress. The real issue this week is the fact that the Platform
Committee did respond to the outpouring of support for the online casino
gambling issue by withdrawing the controversial statement from the official
platform stated on the site. Gamblers rejoiced that their voices were heard by
the Republican Party – but that rejoicing was short lived. Although the
Committee took out the two sentences in the Republican that regarded online
casinos, they put them bag within just a short period of time. The Executive
Director of the PPA, John Pappas was happy to comment when the latest draft of
the platform did not include the controversial online gambling clause. That
victory though was short lived for the PPA and for the internet gamblers who
took the time to appeal for the change of the Republican’s platform stance.
The clause within the platform was sadly reinstated because there was widespread
opposition that it had been taken out in the first place. The Republicans are
looking for as widespread appeal as possible and because of all of the comments
within the forum, the co-chairman of the Committee was willing to try to take
out the controversial clause.
The clause though now reads, “Millions of Americans suffer from problem or
pathological gambling that can destroy families. We support legislation
prohibiting gambling over the Internet or in student athletics by student
athletes who are participating in competitive sports.”
That is certainly not what the Republican online casino gamblers were hoping to
achieve with their appeals to the Republican Platform Committee. |
