Not a Fan of Online Casinos
There is certainly a good deal of opposition in the United States to the
licensing and regulation of online casinos in the U.S. market. Not only does the
religious right and many conservative politicians object to allowing large-scale
internet gambling in the U.S., but pressure groups and certain other
organizations wholly object to internet gambling. The opposition to legalizing
and regulating online casino gambling in the U.S. is actually a surprisingly
small sub-set of the U.S. population and the U.S. politicians, but groups and
politicians against online gambling are quite vocal and forceful in asserting
their opinions to the masses.
Focus on the Family is one organization that is taking any steps necessary to
eliminate the potential for legal online casino gambling in the U.S. This
pressure groups has already shown intense opposition for bills presented by
Democrat Barney Frank (a well known supporter of regulated internet gambling)
and Nevada Representative Shelley Berkley. Berkley in particular is pushing for
a year-long intense study of the U.S. internet gambling industry. Specific
pieces of the study would look into the feasibility of effectively licensing and
regulating domestic and offshore online casinos for the U.S. market. Focus on
the Family though is has taken the position that the study is a mere formality
and is actually designed to promote the licensing and regulation of the internet
gambling industry.
The fact of the matter is though, that though there is opposition from pressure
groups and a handful of republican politicians, the vast majority of the United
States and in fact most of the Congressmen and women who passed the
controversial online casino gambling ban did not even know what was happening.
The act was unintentionally passed through into law by many politicians and is
now going through the difficult process of a reversal or new legislation to
neutralize the Act. The current opposition is just a small road block for the
internet casinos. |
