Confusing the Poker Gamblers
The issue of taxation has come up for Finnish land and online casino poker
gamblers thanks to new procedures by the Finnish tax authorities. The new
initiative to gain tax revenue from poker gambling earnings has caused some
extreme consternation with Finnish poker players. The tax authorities sent
letters to many poker players who were listed on gambling Web sites as having
one large winnings and participated in poker tournaments in European and abroad.
The confusion is partly generated by the lack of specific information related to
the taxation code on poker gambling winnings. Land and online casino poker
gamblers are not required to pay taxes on earnings within the European Economic
Area – but some gamblers are confused about the tax situation if the company
offering the poker tourney was licensed and operating within the EEA but the
tournament itself was located outside of the region. While all of these
questions can be easily answered in time, the tax authorities gave poker players
at the land and online casinos and alarming short period of time to declare
their winnings for the past five years.
Also of note is the apparent method that the tax authorities used to monitor
which Finnish citizens were gambling at the land and online casinos – they
scoured the winner lists! Internet gambling sites and industry papers around the
world report the outcome of poker tourneys and apparently the tax authorities
have at least partly used these resources as the basis for which individuals
received the letter requesting the declaration of winnings.
