New Online Casino Study Furthers Debate
From land to online casinos poker gambling, nations are increasingly being
forced to answer the tough question: is poker primarily a game of skill or luck?
Courts in the United States have ruled that the game, while influenced by skill
is still primarily a game of luck because players have no control over the cards
they are dealt. Courts in other countries have come to similar conclusions on
the skill or luck debate, while players all over the world assert that the game
is largely skill based while there is an element of luck. A recent study by a
doctoral student at Case Western Reserve University concludes that skill is more
prominent than luck in land and online casinos poker gambling.
The Case Western student, Michael DeDonno, conducted the same study twice to
confirm what the first study concluded, that students given land and online
casinos poker strategy tips and charts fared statistically significantly better
than students who played the game with only luck on their side. DeDonno then
repeated the study with two different test groups and concluded the same
results.
The Science Daily online based magazine published an article recently that
highlighted DeDonno’s findings. DeDonno remarks, “This article provides
empirical evidence that it is skill and not luck.” The skill versus luck debate
has the potential to really cause some changes all over the world if there is
ever an international consensus in the debate (not very likely). The poker
players’ advocacy group, the Poker Players Alliance, is pushing the debate that
internet casino poker is a skill game as a way to have the activity bypass
current restrictions on the nation’s internet gambling industry. |
