Antigua Monitors U.S. Gambling Industry
The Antiguan government is just one of the many nations carefully watching the
U.S. online casinos gambling industry for indications that the U.S. and Congress
will neutralize or repeal the highly controversial Unlawful Internet Gambling
Enforcement Act (UIGEA). The Antiguan Minister of Finance, Dr. Errol Cort is
outspoken on the U.S. gambling issue and in recent statements has expressed high
hopes for the U.S. online casinos gambling industry in light of testimony from
the American Bankers Association, several Congressmen, and industry specialists
at the Congressional hearing earlier in the month.
Dr. Cort and Antigua’s leading lawyer Mark Mendel have led the country in a
World Trade Organisation (WTO) case against the U.S. and have so far won $21
million in trade sanctions against the U.S. Mendel recently noted the changes
that Antigua has noticed in just the past few months, he notes "What we’re
looking for is a change in attitude in the United States and an ultimate
acceptance of regulated internet gamblers. It is a direction that the rest of
the world has either already moved to or is moving to and I think this latest
legislation by Barney Frank, and the testimony up on Capitol Hill, is doing a
good job towards educating the American public on this issue and how completely
unworkable a prohibition is… It works in our favour.”
Antigua actively supports Frank’s legislation that will stop the formation of
regulations to enforce the UIGEA, and Frank’s better known bill that proposes
the licensing and regulation of the nation’s online casinos gambling industry. |
