California, Embracing the Online Casinos?
Federal law in the United States has a ban on foreign online casinos gambling
activities and restrictions on domestic internet gambling activity. There are
debates as to whether the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA)
applies to interstate internet gambling, but it seems that California is the
first of the U.S. states to assert that the UIGEA has no effect on interstate
online casinos and poker gambling. As such, a new bill has been proposed to
California State legislators would authorize a state-sponsored study into
expanding poker gambling options in the state by legalizing and regulating
internet poker.
Naturally there are two sides to the issue, but at this point there seems to be
a fair amount of support for the bill, AB 2026. The bill will not actually
legalize online casinos poker gambling in the state, but rather pushes for an in
depth and thorough study of the feasibility and impact of internet poker in the
state.
The bill’s main opponents at this point is the California Coalition Against
Gambling Expansion. This group does not even support the state studying the
issue and asserts that the state government should be focused on limiting the
number of gambling choices in the state rather than looking at options for
increasing the opportunities and ability to gamble through the online casinos in
addition to the many land casinos and gambling facilities.
Proponents though contend that it is only a study at this point, and that the
Californian’s are already gambling through the online casino poker gambling
sites, so not only could the state could benefit from taxing the existing
internet poker gambling, but the players would be protected by a regulated
industry rather than the current murky and underground internet gambling
industry in the U.S. |
