Authority Pulls Online Casino Ads
Widespread gambling advertising in the United Kingdom is a fairly new activity –
just since this past September did the government liberalize the gambling
advertising regulations. The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority was formed as
a way to handle complaints concerning questionable adverts, and now that online
casinos are able to create ads that show on mainstream stations, the ASA is
pressed with an increased number of complaints and has the unfortunate task of
really setting the basic guidelines for future gambling cases.
The two online casinos in question, Intercasino and Paddy Power both found
themselves at the receiving end of some bad news – both companies are forced to
pull their ads after there ASA ruled both companies’ ads violated existing
regulations regarding internet gambling advertising. The ASA investigated the
advertisements in response to complaints from many associated with the online
casinos gambling industry.
For the Paddy Power online casinos gambling and betting company the
advertisements were judged to imply sexual prowess as a result of gambling – a
firm no-no. Although Paddy Power claims that the ads are being misconstrued, the
ASA wasn’t buying the defense and instead ruled that the online gambling company
must pull the ads completely. The ASA noted in response to the ad, “We concluded
the ad was irresponsible."
Intercasino’s ads on the other hand were pulled because their slapstick,
cartoony nature was deemed to target underage gamblers. As with Paddy Power, the
justification to the ASA didn’t fly and the online casinos gambling company must
ceases using these particular advertisements. |
