The Truth About Youth Gambling
Most in the United States are aware that youth gambling, betting, and online
casino gambling was an issue in recent years. But what the media has failed to
report is that the statistics show a decline in the number of youth gamblers now
that the government, gambling organizations, and watchdog groups have made
concerted efforts to educate and prevent youth gambling. The government has even
done a disservice to the American public by citing youth gambling as a reason
for the recent online casino gambling ban. Though the government claims multiple
reasons for prohibiting offshore gambling companies access to the U.S. market,
protecting underage gamblers was on the list of reasons.
The truth is though, despite whatever agenda the media chooses to push, the
National Annenberg Risk Survey of Youth study conducted by the Annenberg Public
Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania shows a decline across the board
in all forms of youth gambling activities – including card playing, online
casinos and internet poker. A Pittsburgh blogger is fed up with the negative
portrayal of online casino and poker and actually went to the source rather than
read the misrepresented facts in newspaper articles.
The blogger, Gene Bromberg, comments on the youth online casino gambling study,
"I actually READ the report that the Annenberg Center issued. On the very first
page, right under the main title of "Card Playing Trend In Young People Starts
to Diverge", comes the sub-title 'First Signs of Decline in Youth Under 18'.
See, it turns out that card playing among young people is actually decreasing.”
The report showed decreases in the percentage of male youths 14-22 who played
cards for money (2006: 11.6 percent, 2005: 12.5 percent). Another significant
statistics was the decline in the number of male youths 14-17 who gambled weekly
and also showed at least one problem gambling symptom (2006: 6.7 percent, 2005:
13.9 percent).
The report only continued to show evidence that contradicts everything the media
is purporting today about the problem with youth gambling at online casinos and
poker sites. Though the fact that the statistics exist is in fact an issue, the
media distorts the issue to indicate that youth gambling is not under control
and in decline.
