Gambling Study Tidbits
The UK’s Gambling Prevalence study is due to announce its results at the end of
September, but already some prominent UK newspapers have an inside scoop on some
of the statistics. The reporting media have all alluded to the fact that problem
gambling has increased in the UK since the previous problem gambling study,
eight years ago. This latest study is announcing its results conveniently to
coincide with the newly implemented 2005 Gambling Act regulations that heavily
affect online casino and betting companies. Multiple newspapers have carried a
few tidbits from the Prevalence study, and already the online casinos and
land-based gambling groups
The National Centre for Social Research consulted with Birmingham University on
the Gambling Prevalence Study which took an in-depth look at the number of
problem gamblers, how much money they spend annually on the addiction, and more
social statistics. The Obeserver was just one of the many newspapers to run a
story on the gambling study, and important to consider in the results is that
comparisons are from the study that was conducted more than eight years ago,
when online casino gambling was in its infancy.
The Observer reports that “regular online gamblers” in the UK have increased to
nearly 1 million. Also, those 1 million gamblers, on average spend GBP 1,000 at
online casino gambling, betting, and sportsbooking sites – thus totaling over
GBP 1 billion in monies spent exclusively on internet gambling activities.
The statistics from the study that have already been reported by the newspapers
are largely cast in an unfavorable light, and although the Department of
Culture, Media, and Sport has commented that these new statistics are not
primarily for comparison, but rather as a base-line for future studies and
problem gambling statistics. Most online casinos companies though aren’t buying
it and are preparing for an onslaught of negative media attention after the
results are released.
