Law is Here to Stay
Much to the chagrin of many in the online casino and gambling industry as a
whole, the UK Gambling Commission is here for the long haul, and recent changes
in legislation are just the beginning of the Commission’s efforts to address
some of the many problems that have gone unattended in the past years.
All sectors of the online casino and land-based gambling industries are now
under the control of the Gambling Commission. Some of these sectors include:
adult gaming centres, gaming in arcades, gambling in clubs/pubs, bingo, betting,
land-based casinos, online casinos (both remote companies and locally licensed),
and all lotteries excluding the National Lottery.
The Gambling Commission is now far-reaching and encompasses everything from
advertising to the power of local authorities over online casino and land-based
gambling companies.
Concerning online casino advertising, there are a few changes that affect all
sectors of the industry – land-based gambling as well. The creation of the UK’s
“White List” means that certain online casinos are able to participate in
television advertising laws. Basically, gambling companies are allowed to
advertise after 9 pm. The only exception to this law are allocations for betting
advertisements during sporting events.
Also, the advertisements have restrictions that will hopefully curb some
previous problems with adverts that targeted underage gamblers. Now all models
in gambling advertisements (all gambling, not just online casinos) must use
models over 25 years old. |
