A Change of Heart
Those UK gamblers with their hearts set on more land-based gambling in the
country
(to counter the huge spread of online casinos gambling) may be in store for
disappointment – then again maybe not. It’s rather interesting how rapidly the
UK’s entire attitude and legislation shifted after the country’s elections
earlier this year. Not only did the online casino and land-based gambling
industry lose a strong advocate in former Prime Minister Tony Blair, but Gordon
Brown appears to have a markedly different approach to addressing gambling in
the country.
One of Brown’s first actions once in office was to immediately stop any further
development on the Manchester supercasino. When Brown nixed the supercasino,
plans for smaller land-based casinos were also put on hold. And now the Culture
Secretary, James Purnell, announced that authorities in the previously 16
planned locations for the land-based casinos have a chance to speak their peace
if they still want to proceed with a land-based casino.
For the most part though, it looks as though the online casino industry is the
only part of the gambling community that authorities are willing to accept. Many
of the local authorities in these planned locations also changed over in the May
elections – and consensus seems to be that most areas do not want to deal with
the land-based gambling industry in their town. For some authorities, though,
the responses against online casino and land-based gambling come from a purely
ideological stand-point rather than based off of possible local economic
benefits.
