Frivolous Lawsuits
The CEO and founder of the Bodog Entertainment Group, Calvin Ayre, is quite
vocal in his dismissal of the U.S. government, its court rulings, and any U.S.
laws that attempt to stop offshore online casino gambling activities. Bodog is
one of only a handful of companies that still operates online gambling
activities in North America; most companies have left the United States out of
fear of the reach of the U.S. Department of Justice. And though the company has
defied the U.S. online casinos ban (the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement
Act), the decision to ignore recent patent litigation with 1st Technologies is
essentially another chance for the company to figuratively thumb its nose at the
U.S. government.
Bodog is based out of Antigua (the company moved jurisdictions after the UIGEA
came into effect) and operates a highly successful online casino poker site that
services U.S. players. The recent 1st Technologies patent litigation caused some
minor setbacks at the Bodog in terms of establishing a new domain name. A press
release for the company comments unfavorably on the U.S. patent litigation.
“"Recently, there have been changes at Bodog concerning the company's domain
name. Bodog temporarily used 'newbodog.com' after their root domain was hijacked
in a frivolous patent dispute. In an effort to move to a more accurately-named
home, the company is pleased to announce bodoglife.com."
Earlier this year Ayre was quoted as saying comments that essentially dared the
U.S. government to try to stop Bodog from accessing the U.S. online casino poker
players. Because the UIGEA still has no supporting regulations and legislation
to give it true enforcement power, some countries are quite content to just stay
off U.S. soil (and thus out of the reach of the Department of Justice) and still
operate online casino poker sites.
And though Bodog’s press statement concerning the domain name change dismissed
the validity of recent U.S. patent litigation, Ayre refrained from incensory
comments and is quoted with the following, "Hey, the world changes, and if you
don't change with it, you get left behind. That said, although the Bodog address
is changing the bottom line is: at Bodog, it's business as usual. Same great
site, just a new Web address." Nothing specific about the U.S. online casinos
industry, just noting the recent changes at Bodog.
