Online Casino Facts Distortion
The distortion of statistics is nothing new to most any industry and the online
casino and internet poker industry is no different. Often companies or
industries as a whole will present part of factual statistics – the part that
shows the company or industry in a favorable light. And recently the media seems
to have an agenda against the online casinos industry and have gone so far as to
misrepresent gambling statistics to indicate that underage gambling is a growing
problem in the U.S.
In fact, the statistics within two recent newspaper articles (from two separate
newspapers!) clearly suggested that online casino gambling and poker activities
are a growing danger for the American youth. Even the article titles indicate a
problem between the online casinos and youth: “Teens Turn to Poker For Profit”
and "Betting Their Lives." Then the kicker is that the articles come off as
completely factually accurate and even include credible statistics from the
Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania. This study
researched into the number of American youth gambling, the types of gambling
activities they engage in (form cards to poker to online casinos.
A blogger from Pittsburgh, Gene Bromberg, wrote an well-thought and informative
article about the misrepresentations in the media concerning the youth gambling
and online casino gaming issue. His blog points out that the Annenberg study
that is quoted in both articles in fact emphasizes that youth gambling rates are
decreasing, and in some cases the statistics show significant progress in
eradicating the youth gambling problem in America. But rather than highlighting
key parts of the study that indicate that the youth gambling problem is under
control, the two articles merely cite youth gambling statistics with no
comparisons to inform readers that the statistics show a declining trend in
online casinos and youth gambling.
