Requests for Open Licensing Denied
Some online casino companies have requested that the South African government
consent to automatic licensing in the country when the internet gambling is
passed. Automatic licensing would mean that the government had little say-so
over the online casinos entering and serving the South African market. The
Department of Trade and Industry is pushing the current bill that will soon go
before the South African Parliament for consideration and would also be involved
in the licensing process if the online casinos bill does pass through into
legislation.
The Deputy Director at the Department of Trade and Industry, Fungai Sibanda,
though immediately negated any possibility that the DTI would allow automatic
licensing of online casinos. Sibanda noted that there is no country or
jurisdiction in the world today that operates with automatic licensing. The
request borders on absurd, especially considering the level of concern in the
government about protecting online casino players from criminal activities,
addiction, and more.
Instead, as the bill proposes, the licensing process in South Africa, should the
online casino bill pass, will be transparent and fair to all new and existing
companies attempting to enter the South African market. There are some online
casinos operating in the market even though internet gambling is not officially
legal. But an open licensing process, combined with new regulations would mean a
thoroughly controlled interactive gambling experience. Once the bill passes
through to approval, the DTI Minister will begin to determine the restrictions
and requirements on the licensing process. |
