Commission Comments on Prevalence Study
The UK Gambling Commission was pleased to note that the results from the
Gambling Prevalence Study have shown little increase in the number of UK problem
gamblers. Notably, most in the online casino and gambling industry were
expecting that the results would show a significant increase because of recent
negative media coverage and speculation. Some media outlets had even gone so far
as to attest that the study found a large increase in problem gambling – which
is now proven untrue. And though the online casinos industry was prepared
negative attention once the results were published, the reverse is in fact true.
In addition to the media, the online casino industry was also surprised by the
results. Though the online casino companies are increasingly more socially
responsible, the gambling industry has grown considerably in the past eight
years, and most in the industry expected an increase in problem gambling
prevalence after eight years of industry growth. “The key message is that
overall there has been surprisingly little change either in the number of
gambling participants or to the number of problem gamblers since 1999,” notes
the out-going UK Gambling Commission Chairman, Peter Dean.
Dean also elaborates on the Commission’s efforts to tackle problem gambling
“through the new licensing regime.” New regulations in the industry force
“British-based gambling operators” to “comply with strict and detailed social
responsibility obligations.” Additionally, the Commission will then monitor the
online casino companies to ensure they are complying with the social
responsibility measures.
In general though, the Commission was positive toward the online casinos
industry, and the land-based gambling and betting companies and the efforts that
the industry as a whole has made to address and prevent problem gambling. And
though Dean is the out-going Chairman, the overall attitude of the Commission is
to work with the online casino companies to create a safe gambling environment
for all UK gamblers, and the world at large.
