France Gambling Policy Questioned
It is certainly not new news that the European Union (EU) has expressed concern
over France’s reluctance to comply with free trade obligations and cross border
competition regulations. Like other nations, France bans betting and online
casino gambling companies from accessing French players, yet allows the
state-run gambling monopolies to run betting and gambling. And though the EU has
actively asked France to amend the policy, months later, the policies are still
in place that prohibit online casinos and betting companies located in other
countries.
Despite resistance to the EU’s constant prodding to alter the existing
prohibitory gambling laws, France asserts that it is not entirely reluctant to
open up the existing betting and gambling market. A French minister, Eric Woerth,
commented that the stipulations to opening up gambling and betting is that
France will “control” the process and further, the country will not allow “just
any operator” access to the French market. So though online casinos and betting
are still not a surefire guarantee, the French government is “not hostile to
opening up to online gambling,” says Woerth.
The EU has continually pushed for a quick resolution to the France problem and
it looks as though it could potentially find resolution on October 17in Paris.
Many individuals representing the various interests in French online casino
gambling and betting all met a few weeks ago in Brussels to discuss the issue
and possible resolutions – and the Paris meeting is a follow up that will
highlight information on a new French model for betting and online casino
gambling activities and will include the current state gambling and betting
monopolies.
