A Direct Link for Problem Gamblers

Recent studies have show that video roulette has the most direct link to problems gamblers out of any form of gambling. Evidence indicates that betting shop terminals are a real problem for a large number of the problem gambling population in the UK – yet the online casino industry is most often blamed for the rising number of problem gamblers in the UK. This discrepancy is largely because the mainstream media is so quick to point a finger at the online casino industry whenever problem gambling is mentioned.

And though the UK Gambling Prevalence Study results, published last month, indicate that the percentage of problem gamblers in the UK has not increased in the last ten years – the number of problem gamblers is in fact larger but has increased in proportion to the surge in new gamblers. And with more and more gamblers turning to the online casinos, betting shops, and land-based casinos, the money lost by gamblers in the UK is at an all-time high. A report in The Guardian, a UK newspaper, indicates that money lost at the online casino sites and land-based gambling options will rise above GBP 10 billion annually. This means a 50 percent increase in money lost over the past nine years.

And unlike the many newspapers that take any opportunity to lambast the online casino industry, the article in The Guardian largely attributes the rise in problem gamblers and the money lost by gamblers to the betting shop terminals. Surprisingly to many, the betting shop video roulette terminals alone take in nearly as much money as the rest of the online casinos and land-based gambling industries.
