The UK Gambling Craze
The new UK Gambling Commission took over full control of the land-based and
online casino gambling industries on September 1, 2007 – and many in the UK are
attributing the surge in gambling activities in the UK to the government’s
permissive role in monitoring gambling. Because though the UK Commission is one
of the most powerful Gambling Commissions in the world, the Commission takes the
position of allowing the online casinos, betting companies, and other gambling
companies more liberties in the UK in return for stricter regulations and
control.
On the whole, this approach is not inherently negative, but it has meant that
the UK has more gambling activities than ever before – granted they are closely
watched and regulated by the UK Commission. Many attribute the increase in
problem gamblers to three recent governmental moves. The UK abolished betting
duty, meaning that more and more online casino betting, and land-based gambling
companies have flooded the UK market.
Then, prior to the passage of the 2005 Gambling Act, the government pledged to
address the betting shop betting terminals. Because of the ridiculously high
number of problem gamblers associated with the video roulette games, most
outside of the online casino industry, and many of the problem gambling support
organizations called for the government to ban the terminals. But in the passage
of the Gambling Act, the terminals were now under the authority of the Gambling
Commission and thus will stay until the Commission deems the terminals to risky.
And to that end, the Commission acknowledges that one in nine terminal gamblers
are classified as addictive and will “monitor them closely."
Last on the list of contributions to the increase in UK gamblers is the
popularity of the online casino gambling industry. Internet gambling is on the
rise in recent years, and with the U.S. market no longer available, many online
casinos companies are focusing intently on the European market.
