CEO Arrest Reprehensible
The French government has consistently defied European Union free trade
agreements over the past several months in regards to online casino gambling
policies. France is a member of the EU, yet has state-run gambling monopolies
and restrictions in place to prohibit other gambling companies from providing
services to French citizens. Because of the restrictions against out-of-state
online casino gambling and betting companies the French government issued a
warrant for the arrest of Petter Nylander, the CEO of Unibet. Nylander has now
agreed to being extradited to France to face charges for violating French
protectionist laws.
The European Commission, along with other EU countries are actively involved in
this case now because of the fact that France is so adamantly defying EU laws
and going against the requests of the European Commission. In recent months the
French government has participated in discussions with the Commission to end the
ban on internet gambling companies based out of other EU member states operating
for French citizens. The European Union is increasingly taking a more liberal
attitude toward online casino gambling and betting, and the Commission is
encouraging France to similarly adopt more liberal and inclusive internet
gambling policies.
And as for Nylander, he is unfortunately caught in the middle of the ongoing
discussions with France. Because France has yet to alter the 19th Century
policies that protect the two French online casinos gambling monopolies,
Nylander was extradited last month and reported through his lawyers that he
would not fight the charges or the extradition – but at the same time he does
not agree that there is any real foundation for a legal case against him.
When commenting on the online casinos related debacle, Nylander noted to a Dutch
newspaper that Unibet is “doing nothing illegal because [the company has] a
license for Britain, and according to the European rules, if you have a license
for one member state, you are authorized to use it in the others.”
