Illegal Asian Sports Betting
Running illegal internet gambling whether via an online casinos site, or
sportsbetting rarely pays off in the long run – particularly when Interpol steps
in to help local governments identify and eradicate the pastime. A massive
targeted Asian targeted sting took place over the last several months and
resulted in the arrests of hundreds of people implicated in the illegal
sportsbetting and even more in confiscated funds related to the illegal bets
accepted and organized by organized crime gangs.
Asia is a newly emerging gambling market and has few options in terms of online
casino sites legally operating in their region, and even fewer options for
sports betting. But the internet is pervasive and hard to control across country
lines without strict legislation like that found in the United States (which is
only partially effective in eliminating online casinos and internet poker). That
is why the Asian market is such an easy target for organized crime to operate.
Without regulations in place to monitor land-based and internet gambling
criminal operations like those uncovered recently run rampant.
But notable in the arrests is that law enforcement agencies from all around Asia
(Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and Macua) teamed up with
Interpol to pull off the large-scale operation. Jean-Michel Louboutin, the
organization's Executive Director of Police Services noted, "These significant
results demonstrate the impact that national law enforcement can have on
organised crime in their own country when their efforts are coordinated through
the Interpol global network and resources.”
And many outside of the online casinos and gambling industry looked at the
operation as an indication that China is taking the right steps to ensure
security at the 2008 Olympic Games.
