New U.S. State Allowing Betting?
The U.S. is strictly against offshore online casino gambling, but yet another
U.S. state is looking into the possibility of allowing internet horserace
betting. Across the U.S. Americans are able to take part in multiple forms of
internet gambling – just as long is it doesn’t touch the genre of online casinos
gambling. And the fact that many states participate in internet betting and
fantasy sports teams – yet offshore companies are prohibited from operating
internet gambling on U.S. soil is part of the current problems the U.S. is
having with the World Trade Organisation. But while the WTO takes the time to
sort out the online casino gambling issues, Illinois may very well join the
dozens of other states that benefit from internet gambling revenue.
Allowing internet betting for horse racing, state lotteries, and fantasy sports
are just one way for the state to benefit from what is inevitable anyway.
Because so many U.S. states take advantage of the legislation that both
prohibits online casinos and allows state internet betting, Illinois residents
have access to the activity even if legislation is not passed in the state of
Illinois. The internet is pervasive – even in the highly regulated online casino
gambling industry, the U.S. is having issues truly enforcing the ban on
transactions with offshore casinos.
And a key argument in Illinois centers on the fact that the state is losing up
to $100 million in revenue from Illinois residents who participate in online
betting through other states. The Executive Director at the Illinois Racing
Board, Marc Laino, noted that "Internet gaming is here." While online casinos
may be harder to find in the U.S., . "Trying to stop it in Illinois will only
limit the potential revenue for the state." He continues concerning the amount
of online casinos betting money going out of state, "It's in play in most of the
country," said Laino. "We're one of the few racing jurisdictions that haven't
authorized it. We're losing out."
