Some who are involved it the online casino and poker gambling industries are surprised that Yahoo! has announced and launched an online poker Web site targeted at UK gamblers. But an important point that many neither understand nor consider is the fact that the U.S.’s anti-online casinos gambling restrictions apply to U.S. based monies. Internet gamblers from the UK are perfectly legal under the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, even if the company is based out of the United States.

Additional regulations in the industry include agreements the U.S. made over a decade ago concerning free exchange of goods and services. Though the World Trade Organisation has ruled the current anti-online casinos legislation against foreign policy, the U.S. is standing firm that it has not broken any agreements. Further, these agreements have outlined that foreign business may not operate online casinos in the U.S. The U.S.’s stance is that American companies can operate internet gambling sites because the E.U. did not place restrictions on foreign gambling.

Yahoo! is based out of California and is a multi-faceted internet service provider and search engine. And because Yahoo! is such prominent force on the Web, the fact that the company is offering online casino gambling services abroad has been given more weight than perhaps necessary by the media, and others in the industry. And for those truly concerned, consider that Google is also branching out into the online casino poker industry in Europe and has similar offerings to Yahoo’s internet poker site.
