Some Countries Prove Problematic
Rajchl is a corporate lawyer for Bwin International, an online casino,
sportsbetting, and generally large scale gambling services company. Over the
last year Bwin has made international headlines with acquisitions such as the
huge poker operator Ongame, as well as expansions into more countries, and new
Web sites and online casinos. But even though Bwin is in the process of
expanding world-wide, Rajchl notes that there are still a few companies who
neither support internet gambling, nor do they allow gambling advertising.
As Bwin continues to expand into other countries, and merge with well-known
online casinos and sports betting groups, they also have some countries that
require strict procedures. Rajchl notes for example that Germany is so divided
on the issue that a German Football Club that Bwin sponsors, SV Werder Bremen,
cannot wear the Bwin logo on equipment and jerseys in Munich, Germany, but yet
it is fine in Stuttgart. Rajchl also notes: “France, for instance, is very
aggressive. The European Commission (EC) has already initiated discussions with
the most problematic countries such as France, Germany and Italy, asking these
countries to explain why they regulate the online betting market. But, for
instance, in non-EU state Turkey we had to end our online betting activities as
they are prohibited.”
And the choice to leave Turkey was just that, a choice. Because of the recent
rulings in the European Court of Justice, technically, as long as the online
casino and betting company were run out of a country that does allow internet
betting and gambling, then the country is safe from legal action—this is mainly
to protect the notion of free movement of trade and services within the European
Union.
Some of the countries that are currently fighting against online casino gambling
within their borders cite addictions and under-age gambling as main reasons for
the restrictions. But Bwin’s lawyer Rajchl notes that the company has protective
measures for the gamblers to ensure that those with addictive like habits are
investigated by the company, and then worked with to monitor the addictive
behavior.
Rajchl goes on to further assess the online casino gambling market, and how the
generalities associated with the different countries. He uses the Greece and
Czech’s well-known national football clubs to comment on their betting habits,
“Greeks follow their heart more, whereas, for instance, Czechs follow rather
their minds. I always give the example of if Olympiacos C.F.P plays Barcelona,
half of Greece will bet on Olympiacos, whereas if AC Sparta Praha plays
Barcelona, I won’t know of any Czech person betting on AC Sparta Praha!"
