Land-Based Companies Join the Online Casino Gambling
Industry
Now that the anti-online casino gambling industry is banned it the United
States, many U.S. based companies are entering the international market and
offering gambling services exclusively in Europe. The two major internet search
engines have joined the industry, and now it seems that land-based casinos are
choosing to run online casinos for European players.
Specifically, the U.S. land-based casino The Las Vegas Sands is operating an
online casino for UK gamblers. But just because the company is entering this
highly lucrative industry doesn’t mean it will survive. On the contrary, the
hugely successful land-based casino operator Harrah’s entered the online casinos
industry for a mere six months before it had to shut down the Web site and move
onto other ventures.
And perhaps because the online casino industry is a billion dollar business
could explain why some unlikely companies are supporting the industry through
advertisements. Disney/ABC owns multiple channels, Web sites, and more. ESPN in
particular is owned by Disney/ABC and is currently supporting some of the most
popular online casino Web sites in the industry: Skybet.com and Bet365.com.
So far, the U.S. has made no attempt or shown concern for the fact that U.S.
companies are involved in online casinos overseas. The Senators and Congressmen
are currently focusing on addressing and rectifying the problems and societal
ills associated with online casino gambling in the U.S. such as addictive credit
card gambling and minors gambling at online casinos. Though Senators like Kyl
have shown that seemingly random legislation can be passed through Congress
overnight, it does not appear that the U.S. will hamper the business U.S. based
companies are doing abroad.
