A Felony Offense in Washington?!?
As preposterous as many find the U.S.’s latest federal moves to stop online
casino gambling in the states, it seems that Washington State has everyone beat
out in terms of bizarrely severe punishments. In Washington State, any form of
online gambling—and this include both online casinos, betting, and even the
hugely popular online poker, could mean a Class C felony offense on your record.
Seem a bit severe? We think so too.
This state law looks particularly absurd when the one looks at the bigger
picture. Other Class C felonies include fleeing the police, robbing a grave, and
possessing child pornography. And now, on par with those other offenses is
online casino gambling. Is it just me, or is there something just a little off
with this logic? Unlike the federal laws which are now making the distinction
between those offering online casino services, and those players gambling and
playing online poker, Washington State believes online gambling from the privacy
of your own home is, and should be a felony offense.
At first is seemed that the Washington State law had been a mistake, but then
they announced a miscommunication with the public, and the felony status of
online casino gambling remains.
Most online casino players agree that this law is extremely invasive…the state
government is literally regulating what you can do in the privacy of your own
home. Others just laugh at the absurdity. Because of the structure of the
internet, and the nature of online casinos and making online payments, the
government will have a hard time both finding the online casino gamblers, and
then verifying their gambling.
