Founder Extradited to the U.S.
Last June the United States indicted Gary Stephen Kaplan, the founder of
BetonSports.com, an online casino gambling group accused of participating in a
ring of fraudulent activity that miscoded transactions so that U.S. based
financial institutions would process the transactions despite the ban. The CEO
of BetonSports.com, David Carruthers, was previously arrested for similar
charges, and like Kaplan he adamantly insists on his innocence.
Kaplan was arrested in Dominica, and then extradited back to the United States
for his trial. Later this month Kaplan will attend his detention hearing—the
judge will then decide if Kaplan should be released on bond. The other indicted
individuals awaiting trail are all out on bond because they are not considered
flight risks (except Carruthers who is a British subject currently under
house-arrest). Kaplan, like the others, pled non-guilty to the charges he
faces—primarily racketeering concerning the online casinos.
The FBI had been actively searching for nearly eight months—a Missouri Federal
grand jury indicted him in June of 2006, and his company, BetonSports.com closed
down U.S. based operations in August of 2006. Like many online casinos, the U.S.
legislation mean a loss of nearly 95 percent of the company’s revenue—so they
turned to fraudulent activities to recoup funds. The current allegations stem
from an online casino company based out of Costa Rica and affected not only
Kaplan, but ten others as well.
