A Comparison of Land-Based and Online Casinos
ResearchandMarkets.com is a company dedicated to studying the casino
industry—this includes land-based casinos and online casino gambling. Recently
they conducted a thorough and comprehensive study of gambling in the U.S. from
betting, to poker, to online casinos, the study looked at every conceivable
aspect.
And in addition to looking at the revenue across five major segments, the study
targeted growth opportunities within the land-based and online casino industries
in terms of casino, region, and demographics. Then, another part of the study
looked into the psychographics of online casino and land-based casino gamblers.
Questions answered by the research includes motivations for gambling, why they
prefer one type of gambling over another (some gamblers only visit land-based
casinos for slot machines, while others will only participate in online casino
gambling for internet poker or blackjack).
Currently online casinos are illegal in the United States, but that does not
mean that all of the off-shore companies have stopped targeting the U.S. market.
On the contrary, because it is still not illegal for the U.S. citizens to gamble
(it is rather illegal for banks to process the transactions from online casino
companies), many citizens have sought out the online casinos still willing to
risk accepting U.S. monies. Other types of gambling included in the U.S. study
include were broken down into types of gambling: card rooms, tribal casinos,
racetrack casinos, and even riverboat casinos.
The study highlighted that the first six years of the new millennium were the
hey-day of gambling in the U.S., with a particular focus on 2004-2006 as these
were the years when many states previously opposed to casinos allowed some form
of gaming in the state as a way to support state governments. Also revealed in
the study is perhaps why the U.S. has taken action against online casinos: the
primary demographic for online casino gambling is 18-24 year olds. This is a
stark contrast to the land-based casinos—the success of land-based ones lies in
the hands of older adults and baby boomers.
