BWin Expands Territory
Bwin Interactive International is one of the largest online casino gambling
groups in Europe—much of the company’s revenue comes from online sports betting,
table games, and no-download internet gaming options. Bwin has operations and
Web sites in several countries, and their latest conquest seems to be Czech,
although domestic companies are not pleased with the competition the Bwin online
casinos bring to Czech.
Bwin has found a great deal of success in Europe and countries that are a part
of the European Union because of the European Court of Justice. The ECJ tends to
lean toward supporting online casino gambling companies. Basically, Rajchl, a
corporate lawyer for Bwin explains that a recent court ruling found that if the
online casino company is legal in its home country, which is a part of the EU,
then the online casinos can do business in all U countries without
repercussions. The EU supports free movement of trade and services, and is
astute enough to recognize that the internet is often a
“business-without-borders.”
Bwin has a few main hubs and subsidiary companies throughout Europe, the main
hub is located in Austria, and another operating through a different branch of
Bwin operated out of Gibraltar—each company offers different Web sites/online
casinos for the differing European countries. The smaller companies though feel
like Bwin has the monopoly over the internet gambling business in Czech. Fortuna
is a smaller online casino gambling company that has had an extremely difficult
time finding a foothold in the industry since Bwin.cz is so popular and
pervasive.
But Rajchl goes on to note that although they plan to continue operations in
Czech, the company does prefer to run sportsbetting and online casinos in
countries where Bwin can obtain a license, and carry on legally. HE explains:
“In the Czech Republic, the problem is with the Ministry of Finance. They tell
us our business is illegal as we don’t have a license, but at the same time they
say they’ll never permit online betting.”
