Bring Back the Online Casinos!
Barney Frank is currently developing and supporting a bill for Congress that
would usurp the Unlawful Internet Gambling Awareness Act. He is pushing for
Congress to agree to licensing and regulation of online casinos rather than the
current ban in place. And he isn’t the only one who thinks that the United
States needs to seriously rethink the UIGEA, the Safe and Secure Internet
Gambling Initiative is powered by the UC Group (a London based company) which
has an interest in seeing online casino gambling legalized in the U.S. once
again.
The UC Group is an online casino payment services provider, so naturally the
group will benefit from large-scale U.S. gambling once again. But the support
for Frank’s bill goes one step further, CEO of the UC Group, Kobus Paulson,
says, “We are proud to be backing this Bill which will bring safety and security
to this line of business, an objective which we have been committed to achieving
for quite some time.”
Because the online casino gambling industry has no current regulations and safe
guards against misuse, even international companies like the UC Group see the
benefit in a set of specific regulations and controls, rather than a ban which
just encourages gamblers to play at online casinos below the government’s radar.
A spokesperson for the group, Jeffrey Sandman, elaborates, “Millions of
Americans are currently gambling online in an unregulated environment without
any consumer protection. Internet gambling is a matter of personal choice and
many Americans see the current prohibition as an unnecessary intrusion into
their private life.”
Central to Frank’s bill is the notion that with the changes to current U.S.
legislation, the U.S. will be providing more protection to the online casino
players than the UIGEA provides through set controls and constant monitoring.
U.S. players have not stopped gambling at the online casinos, and there isn’t
any way for the U.S. to stop them from playing, since it is not illegal. So it
seems that the government is in a check situation, with the only move being to
take a step back and re-evaluate the situation.
Paulson also says, “It is clear that prohibition in the US isn’t working for
anyone. Instead of leaving internet gambling unregulated, uncontrolled and
underground, this legislation will create meaningful protection and safeguards
for consumers throughout the USA. It will also ensure the integrity of internet
gambling transactions.”
Baker Tilly, a British accounting group is also working with the UC Group to
support the Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative.
