UK Gambling Act Causes Concerns
By and large in the internet gambling industry simply likes to be left alone
from excessive regulations and restrictions – this goes for online casinos,
poker and bingo sites, and even sports betting. And now many in the UK are
widely protesting the 2005 Gambling Act because of an alleged leniency toward
land-based casinos over poker gambling. For this reason, the UK Poker Clubs
Association has announced they plan to take the issue to a High Court challenge
at the British Casino Association.
The UK Poker Clubs Association formed primarily as a way to ban together and
protest the 2005 Gambling Act. This past April, the Clubs Association announced
that it will use top legal advice and lobbyist to argue on behalf of the more
than 14 poker organizations and 72,000 poker players that the Clubs Association
represents. Specific problems that the Clubs Association has cited include fours
for land-based and online casinos that only offer poker as an ancillary gambling
activity.
Some of the Act’s restrictions that the online casino poker sites disagree with
include a maximum daily fee to registered poker players. And a big problem for
the poker organizations: once the Act takes effect in September, the online
casino and land-based poker sites will be under the same classification as
regular casinos and therefore require licensing. The Clubs Association argues
that the maximum daily fee will have a negative effect on the poker clubs who
use the fee to offer exciting tournaments and player bonuses.
