No Sex and Gambling According to UK Rules
The UK has strict policies regarding advertisings for online casinos and
gambling in general. Recently the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) reported
that the advertising firm responsible for VCPoker.com ads broke a clause that
stresses responsible advertising and prohibits the association of gambling and
sexual prowess in ads for either land-based or online casinos and all forms of
gambling.
The ASA is a watchdog group that specifically looks at the online casino
industries advertisements now that the industry is growing exponentially in the
UK. The ASA found that the ads were irresponsible and promoted the notion that
gambling at the online casino could improve a man’s sex life. The ASA has issued
Victor Chandler, the betting house that ran the VCPoker.com ad in question, with
a warning not to use similar advertising in the future. Specifically, the
advertisement broke CAP Code clauses 2.2 and 54.3 regarding responsible
advertising and betting and gaming respectively.
The ad for the online casino site featured a provocative woman with the tagline:
“You love sex. She loves sex. You love money. She loves money. You have money.
She loves you. See how much you have in common?”
The ASA ruling stands as is, even though Victor Chandler commented that the ad
was used responsibly and to promote an online poker tournament that was held in
January 2007. Chandler stressed that the woman was merely to get attention on
the ad, and not to suggest sex. Also, Chandler noted that the advertisements
were only placed in the restrooms of facilities that had restricted access to 18
and up ensuring that only legal male adults saw the advertisements.
