E.U. Rules in Favor of Free Trade
The European Fair Trade Association is investigating the current situation
involving Norway and the online casino gambling group Ladbrokes. As online
casinos are spreading like wild fire across the European Union, some countries
are putting regulations in place to stop the influx of internet gambling. But
that may just mean that those countries are in violation of the EFTA if they are
allowing a monopoly to form in their country as a result of the regulations.
Just recently, Norway blocked Ladbrokes from accessing the online casino
gambling, betting, and lottery industries within Norway. And in response to that
ruling the EFTA has ruled that those regulations could very well breach the EU’s
fair trade policy. Bwin, a popular online casino gambling group based out of
Vienna, issued a statement concerning the EFTA’s recent ruling. Basically, Bwin
surmises that in this case, the court is being used to determine whether
countries were allowed to form monopolies in regards to the following
industries: horse race betting, sports betting, and lotteries.
Excerpts from Bwin’s press release highlight the changing climate in Europe
right now as online casinos, internet gambling and betting, and state lotteries
cause concern. "The court's judgement confirms the criticism already expressed
by the European Commission of the national restrictions that still exist in some
cases. As long as national legislators are unable to agree on uniform
pan-European regulations for the gaming market, national regulations will
continue to be evaluated in the light of the freedoms of establishment and
services anchored in the Treaty on European Community and the prohibition of
discrimination.”
