Internet Gambling Ads Targeted
Though the online casino gambling industry is extremely lucrative for all
businesses involved in any aspect of the industry, internet gambling
advertisements have been specifically targeted by search engines for the last
few years. Even before the legislation in the United States that essentially
bans online casinos was enacted, major search engines like Google and Yahoo!
developed regulations and restrictions that stopped AdWords and other
advertisements for online casinos. But now, recent policies take the ban even
farther.
The two major search engines are the first to announce that they are adding a
new policy that includes all Web sites that promote online casinos or any forms
of internet gambling in the AdWords restrictions. Even if the Web sites are
frees to users, and offer no forms of online casino gambling, they are now
included in the ban. This new policy is effective in the UK, and stems from
possible prosecution to companies that violate the UK Gaming Act 1968.
The new policy for Google and Yahoo! was released by AdWords and highlights the
following areas: "Advertising is not permitted for online casinos, sports books,
bingo and affiliates with the primary purpose of driving traffic to online
gambling sites. This includes, but is not limited to, the promotion of online
casinos and gambling activities, sports books, lotteries, bingo, poker, sites
that provide tips, odds and handicapping, software facilitating online casinos
and gambling, gambling tutoring online, gambling related eBooks, sites where the
primary purpose is 'play for fun' gambling, or casino games of skill, and
affiliates with the primary purpose of driving traffic to online gambling
sites."
And a Google representative released a statement for the company commenting that
Google “respects people’s differing views on gambling” but that the “new policy
is simpler for everyone to understand and more in tune with user’s wishes.”
