Gambling Companies in Sweden
The Swedish government is currently in a state of change in regards to online
casino gambling and all other forms of gaming activities in the country. Now
that the European Commission is enforcing the free trade and services among EU
countries, Sweden is one of the countries facing legal actions from the
Commission if it does not comply. Given this unsteady climate surrounding the
online casinos in the EU, the Swedish government has announced a renewed look
into the current gaming activities already operating on Swedish soil – and they
are specifically looking for any companies that may be operating without a
Swedish gaming license.
Currently, the Swedish Gaming Board, which oversees both the online casinos and
the land-based gambling activities, announced that it plans to investigate the
gaming companies that may be in violation of Swedish legislation. 24h Poker is
currently under investigation by the Board and has been asked to turn over
pertinent information such as information on the company’s employees, job
descriptions, the company’s trademark, and other specific areas. The future
investigations will include companies related to online casino and land-based
gaming.
Hakan Hallstedt is the Chief Legal Advisor at the Swedish Gaming Board and he
commented that the Board is expecting that many of the companies that are using
Sweden as base operations for employees are operating illegally, without
licenses, and thus could face heavy fines and possible jail-time for those
involved in the illegal online casino and land-based gaming related activities.
Hallstedt says, "Many gaming companies are listed in Sweden and have their
employees here. None of them are permitted to work with gaming related tasks in
Sweden, as this is illegal, yet most of their revenue comes from gaming."
This sounds like another country, the U.S. which has also sent a governmental
agency to investigate companies in possible violation of the online casinos and
gambling ban.
