Online Casino Advertising Still Banned in UK
The new Prime Minister in the UK, Gordon Brown has a distinctly different
approach to online casino and land-based gambling than previous Prime Minister
Tony Blair and his cabinet. Some in the online casinos industry though are
disappointed because previously approved legislation is now being overturned by
the new PM and government cabinet. The new attitude will directly affect online
casinos that had plans to begin advertising on radio and television in the
country, as well as possible changes to the planned supercasino in Manchester.
Former Prime Minister Blair had passed legislation that would lift the current
advertising ban and would subsequently bring in even more revenue for the online
casinos, and for the government. But the previous justification for the gambling
advertisement restrictions are still valid – advertisements that target problem
gamblers and underage UK citizens can cause huge problems and cost the
government even more down the road in addiction treatment programs.
And the online casino gambling industry is not the only are in store for some
changes. Prime Minister Brown announced during “PM Question Time” that he is
reconsidering the previous plans for the Manchester supercasino that would bring
a more Las Vegas style approach to gambling in the UK.
The new Culture Secretary, James Purnell, on the Cabinet and the Prime Minister
will be looking into both issues regarding the online casinos advertising issue
and the supercasinos. Purnell notes that an increase in problem gambling “was
one of the concerns people have mentioned and one of the things that, as a new
minister in this area, I will be going through methodically to see if the
concerns are legitimate.”
