Reversal of the Online Casino Ban
The current climate in the United States is rather volatile and many believe
that new bills calling for regulating the online casino industry rather than the
current ban will pass through Congress in the coming months, others simply hold
out no hope that the current Republican party will see the UIGEA (Unlawful
Internet Gambling Enforcement Act) reversed no matter what pressure the rest of
the international online casinos gambling community puts on the U.S. government.
For that reason, most are predicting that if 2008 means ascension of the
Democratic Party and high on the Party’s agenda is reversal of the gambling ban.
Right now a few options are gaining support in the among politicians and former
U.S. online casino players. Most specifically, Barney Frank’s proposals for
licensing and regulating the industry is rising in popularity especially in
light of the WTO’s rulings against the U.S.’s bans. If Congress chooses to keep
the online casinos ban over the upcoming new bills, then the last hope for
reinstating American freedoms concerning gambling in the privacy of their home
comes down to the 2008 presidential election.
The UIGEA’s opposition is adamant that the 2006 act limits American freedoms
because it forces Americans to specific betting sites. Basically, online casinos
and gambling is not illegal in the United States, but the ban limits the
choices. And now that more and more political leaders are stepping up to voice
their concern over the UIGEA, it looks like a ban reversal is in the U.S.’s
future, it’s just a matter of when. Before or after the next Presidential
election? It all really depends on if Frank wins enough support for IGREA.
