Swedish Online Casino Monopoly Advertises
The Swedish government is adamant that the government’s online casino, Svenska
Spel, should remain the dominant Swedish internet gambling site especially now
that outside gambling companies are able to offer services to Swedish players.
The EU Commission is firm on the notion that all states that are a part of the
European Unioin should practice fair trade and interstate commerce rules. To
that end, many states like Germany and Sweden have altered non-inclusive
governmental restrictions on online casinos, but yet the governments are still
looking to make profits off of the government sanctioned betting and gambling
sites.
Recently, Swedish newspapers have reported that online casino and gambling
companies – specifically Svenska Spel are now advertising in publications
throughout Sweden even though the practice is illegal. Now though, comes the
tricky part. The National Gaming Board is aware that the online casinos Svenska
Spel is promoting gambling activities, and has even reported the practice to the
proper authorities, but to no avail. The government is basically allowing
Svenska Spel, a government owned online casino, to break legislation on the
justification that advertising for the site is the only way that Svenska Spel
can remain one of the top internet gambling companies in Sweden; the company
needs the advantage.
But that just doesn’t seem fair to the other online casinos now entering the
Swedish market, yet many are speculating that the governmental enforcement
agencies may come down hard on outside companies that break the ban on online
casino and gambling activities. A spokesperson for the Svenska Spel echoed these
sentiments and used them as a justification for the illegal advertising. He
says, "It's clear that if we are to be able to defend ourselves against the
competition we have to continue to advertise – we can't shrink our marketing any
more."
And the outlook for a change in the online casino betting practices is dim…the
Gaming Board has now simply stopped reporting the illegal advertising activities
to the government because the authorities are aware of the situation, and are
choosing not to take any further action.
