European Union in Full Enforcement Mode
Many of the European states have consistently defied the EU Commission’s request
that the countries comply with free trade and an open market in all of the EU.
Well, in recent statements the Commission has finally had enough of the
rule-breakers and has stated that it will begin to really assess and monitor the
online casino gambling and betting market to ensure the free movement of
capital. Right now some state governments are strongly protecting their
interests in the online casino betting industries and are not willing to share
revenue and profits with private sector companies – but that will come to an end
immediately according to the Commission.
The Commission’s President, Jose Manual Barroso, comments on the current
situation and the previous lack of enforcement. “While important improvements
have been made in recent years, too many member states persistently infringe
Community law and that is why we are determined to act.”
Countries that can expect some definite action in the coming months include
France, Sweden, and Greece. Both France and Sweden currently allow forms of
online casinos gambling, yet the have severely regulated and stopped all outside
companies. Basically, these counties are supporting a monopoly within the
country’s betting and gambling industry. Then, Greece is non-compliant with EU
policy because it has a complete and total ban on gaming and gambling machines
in the country. To that end, Brussels has had enough of Greece’s ban, and with
the support of the Commission, the Greek government has been served a “Letter of
Final Notice” concerning lifting the country’s gaming machine ban.
The three non-compliant countries, France, Sweden, and Greece, have just one
last chance to cooperate with the Commission’s decisions. At the point that the
countries continue to discriminate against outside online casino gambling and
betting companies the issue will be taken to the European Court of Justice. Once
at the Court, the countries could face significant fines and the Court and force
the governments to change the laws into compliance.
