Canadian Bill Tries for Sneaky
Lucky for the Canadian online casino gambling and poker players they have one
astute Senator on their side. An unassuming “housekeeping” bill with pretty much
uncontroversial legislation has already passed through four House of Commons
without any of the Senators or lawmakers mentioning the effect that slight
change in a telecommunications law could have on the online casinos and gambling
industry in Canada. And even with Senator George Baker’s expressions of concern
over the new bill, others are dismissing his claims that a clause in the new
bill could end the online gambling industry in Canada.
It wasn’t long after the housekeeping bill hit the floor that the Liberal
Senator voiced his criticism of the proposed changed to a Canadian bookmaking
law that currently has little to do with online casinos and gambling, but after
small changes could silence the whole industry. Basically, the controversial
changes to the Criminal Code would replace the phrase “telephone and telegraph”
with "any form of telecommunication." To those in the online casinos industry
and internet gambling supporters, that is a significant change that could later
cause problems, even if that is not the intention of the current government.
Online casinos, internet poker, bingo and skill games are all popular in Canada,
and despite small changes the country’s internet gambling legislation after the
U.S. ban, the country is still open to internet gambling and is a safe haven for
some online gambling companies. Those in support of leaving the bill as is claim
that the proposed adjustment only affects bookmaking and thus will not affect
the online gambling industry.
