Online Casino Closes Operations
Competitive doesn’t even begin to describe the current online casino gambling
landscape –beyond just the regular competition between internet gambling sites,
the changing regulations within each country means that many sites have lost key
markets. Global-Player.com and GPCPoker.com were popular and respected online
casinos and poker sites, but with the internet gambling ban in the United
States, the company lost a huge portion of its regular player base and
subsequently could no longer justify operating the site.
The Global Player brand started in 1999, and is owned by Universal Gaming
Concepts Inc.; the site was well respected for no-hassles, fast payouts, and
ease of use. In the past year, the site used the Boss Media online casino
gambling and poker platforms, but prior to the switch to Boss Media, the sites
were popular for their proprietary software. The online casinos sites shut down
on November 30, 2007, and notified players that their account balances could be
easily withdrawn from their accounts prior to the site shutting down, or they
could manually retrieve their outstanding balance after the site shut down by
contacting the online casinos player support.
And as for reasoning, the online casino and poker site CEO, Giancarlo Bettini,
issued a statement outline why the site was closing. He remarked, The current
changes in the legal and economic landscape of the gaming industry has made it
increasingly difficult for us to compete and retain our market share” said
Bettini. “The strategic decision to cease operations while we are still in the
position to satisfy our obligations to players, vendors, affiliates and staff
reinforces our integrity and commitment to good business practices."
The exclusionary online gambling and betting legislation in the United States
played a large role in company’s decision to shut down the sites. Basically, the
U.S. market is completely off limits to remote online casinos – and without the
traffic, the company was forced to evaluate the expenses related to running the
site versus the number of registered and active players.
