Canadian Official Comments on Online Casinos Effect
Canadian officials may just grow weary of the intense scrutiny of a clause in
the proposed bill that really takes care of “housekeeping” matters. Those in the
Canadian online casino industry are taking it seriously that a clause in the
bill could be interpreted in a way that could potentially make internet gambling
illegal in the country. Politicians and online casinos are weighing in on the
issue, as well as the department Senior Counsel, Anouk Desaulniers. Desaulniers
is firm on the point that the new clause is not meant to target the online
gambling industry in any way put rather to address some deficiencies in the
current bookmaking laws.
Desaulniers is not outspokenly against the online casino gambling industry, so
there is no reason to believe that he has a hidden agenda in passing the new
legislation, but at the same time, others may contend that he does not see the
long-term potential effect that the clause could have if left up to the
interpretation of others. That is the main concern of many who are protesting
the clause. They are online casinos supporters who want to ensure that if the
bill isn’t intended to affect the internet gambling industry that the lawmakers
clarify that point prior to passing the legislation.
The former chief of police, Inkster, noted, the main agenda behind the recent
attention that the online casino gambling industry has placed on this new
clause. He remarks, “There is nothing inherently wrong with gambling or gaming,
but it does attract bad people. That is why regulation is so important; not just
regulation but crystal-clear regulation. I am here to reinforce the
encouragement of my colleagues that amendments could be made to make the intent
of the law clear.”
Desaulniers on the other hand contends that the clause within the new bill is
clear as is because it would effectively modernize Canada’s Criminal Code – the
intention of the act is to limit the ability of third parties to profit from
wagers within the bookmaking industry.
