Not a "Latte" Good for Online Casinos
Online casino gambling is consistently a major target for debate in the United
States since politicians, the U.S. Trade Representatives, and Congress all seem
to operate on with a different view on the legalities of internet gambling. And
while it seems that the online casinos industry is gaining support in the U.S.,
there are still many opponents with wealthy backers. Virginia Congressman Bob
Goodlatte is an outspoken opponent of internet gambling – and interestingly, the
horse racing industry has donated nearly $40,000 in campaign funds to the
Congressman. Because of the current political climate, online casinos and
internet poker sites are the two specific forms of internet gambling that are
illegal in the U.S. – other forms, such as the state lottery, fantasy sports
leagues, and horse race betting are still legal…which begs the question, why?
Congressman Goodlatte’s campaign keeps with the consistent message that online
casino gambling is illegal and what’s more – he goes so far as to state that the
pastime is immoral. Goodlatte, and Congressmen of similar opinion are the key
reason why anti-online casinos legislation like the Unlawful Internet Gambling
Enforcement Act (UIGEA) passed through Congress. And Goodlatte’s specific state
carve-outs that allow for state betting and fantasy sports gambling are a key
reason why the U.S. is having international problems with the World Trade
Organisation.
The horse racing industry is just one sector though of the anti-online casinos
gambling groups that are likely to support Goodlatte’s campaign. Because the
U.S. is still so polarized on the issue Congressman Goodlatte’s completely firm
position on the issue could both win him voters, and alienate others.
