UK Alternative to U.S. Ban
The UK is increasingly promoting the idea in the United States that regulation
of the online casinos industry is a positive alternative to the prospect of the
U.S. paying the European Union billions of dollars in compensation for last
year’s U.S. withdrawal from the internet gambling market. Several interest
groups and the UK Commission have approached the U.S. Congress and politicians
about ending the WTO dispute by passing neutralizing legislation that would
reverse the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act which effectively ended
the U.S. online casino gambling industry.
The EU Commission, Mandelson has spoken with both politicians in Washington,
Congress, and U.S. trade representatives about the EU’s interest in
reestablishing online casinos in the U.S. rather than the estimated $100 billion
dollar compensation claim that many have reported the EU has filed with the
World Trade Organisation.
Then, beyond just the EU, other UK based interest groups are weighing in on the
issue and pressing the U.S. to offer up licensing and regulation as opposed to a
complete ban. The UK Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative spokesperson,
Jeffrey Sandman, remarked on their opinion on the U.S. online casino gambling
ban and subsequent U.S. WTO problems. He notes, "Rather than negotiating away
settlements that could negatively impact the U.S. economy, the Administration
and U.S. Congress should seek a more sensible policy solution and regulate
Internet gambling.” |
