Utah Government Writes Letters
Letter writing as a way to make a political point is all over the news these
days, but it’s not always just the American citizens writing letters to their
government. In Utah, the government is beginning to really come down hard on all
Utah residents that participate in online casino gambling of any kind. Though
online casinos gambling and internet poker are illegal in all of the United
States because of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), that
act does not call for prosecution against the Americans participating in
internet gambling, but rather legal action against the banks and financial
institutions that process the transactions. In Utah though, any form of gambling
is grounds for serious repercussions for the companies and residents.
Utah is the only state that has banned all forms of gambling even state
lotteries and most definitely land-based and online casinos. The only problem is
that internet gambling is terribly pervasive and even with the UIGEA curbing
much of the online casino playing in the country Americans can still find ways
around the internet gambling ban – but maybe in Utah players should heed the
warnings lest they experience prosecution because of it.
Just months ago the Utah government took its first stand against online casino
companies operating internet gambling businesses in Utah and aimed at Utah
residents. When the Utah government began its action against online casinos in
the state four companies allegedly involved in the industry and seven citizens
were rounded up. A Grand Jury in Salt Lake City charged all with felony offenses
and await further action.
So in the state’s latest move to protect its citizens from the “dangers” of
online casino gambling enforcement officials managed to obtains the personal
information (name, address, etc.) on previous internet gamblers who used one of
the four companies charged with felony offenses. Then, in a bizarre twist on
using letter writing to affect change, the Utah government wrote letters to the
internet gamblers giving them warnings and reminders that internet gambling
violates Utah state laws.
