South African Online Casino Regulation
Countries around the world are forced to examine online casino gambling in the
country and take actions to either allow the activity to flourish, or to
institute protective regulations aimed at curbing criminal activities that often
come with unregulated internet gambling. The U.S. recently chose to ban remote
online casinos altogether and no longer allow internet gambling; now though many
in the U.S. are looking to license and regulate the industry as a way to address
concerns that many have raised about the crime and underage gambling. And now it
seems that South Africa is on the verge of regulating the current online
gambling companies and remote gambling companies – but when the government come
to a firm decision on the issue?
As the online casino industry expanded in South Africa, the government has
examined research studies examining the effect of internet gambling on the
country and on the citizens. After the submission to the government of this
international study most have been anticipating action from the South African
government – but now that a regulation bill has finally made it through to the
beginning staged of approval, the Department of Trade and Industry has chosen to
table the legislative proposal. Specifically, the National Gambling Amendment
Bill has been tabled for examination and possibly approval at a later date.
Unregulated online casino gambling allows criminals to easily launder money or
perpetrate other illegal activities. Then the negative effect on problem and
under age gamblers is also immeasurable. With safe guards and regulations online
casinos are forced to maintain minimum standards that include age verification
software and often opt-out service for addicted gamblers. Another important
element of the tabled bill included financial regulations and restrictions that
would further inhibit illegal and criminal activities.
