Sealand Casino Opening Next Month

Though many in the online casino industry are still considering the plans to operate an internet gambling company out of the “sovereign” nation of Sealand absurd, in just a few short weeks the site will become a reality. With the United States’ current legislation against online casinos and all forms of internet gambling, most agree that Major Paddy Roy Bates has created the Web site as a jab against the U.S. At the same time though the “jab” might just have the U.S. laughing at Sealand.

Sealand has come into the spotlight in recent months because Bates, who owns this abandoned sea fort, has adamantly asserted that Sealand is a micro-nation under the rule of no other countries. The “country” is located in international waters, and several countries, including the United States, consider Sealand a part of Great Britain, and thus under the online casino regulations and laws pertaining to the UK.

Sealand rarely has a population over a dozen individuals, and though allegations a few months back that Sealand harbored Gary McKinnon (individual wanted in the U.S. for suspected hacking into NASA and DOD servers), those rumors are unsubstantiated. On the whole it seems that the online casinos venture is just Bates’ latest attempt to test the limits of Sealand’s claimed sovereignty. In addition to the online casino plans Sealand also has its own stamp and currency.

Most in the internet gambling industry are still wondering just exactly what banking institutions the Sealand online casinos will use, and the September 2, 2007 launch of Sealand promises to make headlines again.
